The Bond & Knight Giveaway

Some time ago I did a YouTube video review of a couple Bond & Knight wallets, this origami-style Passport wallet included. Now, as I promised in my YouTube video, I am giving away this beautiful wallet!

A little review about this wallet – in short, it is gorgeous. Ultra-precise cuts and folds with NO stitching! It is made in England from one piece of Italian leather and is based on a design from the 1940s with creative folds and tucks giving it a very slim appearance and feel.

Other than the bi-fold wallet that I purchased from A Simple Leather Belt Co, a wallet made from English Bridle leather, I have not yet held a wallet with such fine and beautiful construction as this Bond & Knight Passport Wallet.

All that being said, seeing as this wallet was sent to me to do a review of, and I have now done so, I would like to pass this gem of a wallet on to one of my readers. Perhaps to you?

To enter this giveaway of a Bond & Knight Passport Wallet, in the comment section of this blog post

  • write a comment with the type of wallet you are carrying now
  • AND a whole number between one (1) and two hundred (200).

The Fine Print –

If two people enter with the same number, and that number is the winner, the first person to have entered will be the winner.

If there is no exact match, the next closest number, higher or lower, will be the winner.

I will use a random number generator to find the winning number.

One entry per email address please.

This giveaway closes at 6pm PST on Friday, November 6th 2015.

The winner of the wallet is required to pay for the cost of shipping the wallet in its pretty little box to their mailing address.

That is it! Play fair, have fun and good luck!

Bond & Knight Origami-Style Wallets

Some time ago the folks at Bond & Knight, independent British leather designers specialising in handmade, bespoke leathergoods sent me a couple beautiful leather wallets to have a look at.

I really liked the quality of the leather and the very unique craftsmanship that went into creating these wallets so I did a video review to share with you my observations about these wallets.

I will be arranging a giveaway of these Bond & Knight wallets in the coming days so stay tuned or even better, click on that little “Follow” thingy that pops up in the lower right-hand corner of the screen so that you can get an email from me with any new blog posts that I write.

Disclosure: Bond & Knight provided NO financial incentive or other reward for this blog post and as always, editorial control remains with me.

MiBelle Custom Leatherworx Giveaway

I am pleased to announce that we have another leather wallet GIVEAWAY to do!!

We have been through the giveaway routine before and this time the giveaway is being hosted by MiBelle Custom Leatherworx based in Dartmouth Nova Scotia.

As I said in my previous post, the owner of MiBelle, Wayne Higgins drove from Nova Scotia out here to BC and stopped to visit with me at which time we discussed the leather work he does.

I was very impressed with the quality of the leathers he chooses to work with and I was also very impressed his stitching skills. Wayne is a guy who pays attention to the details!!

I have already sent the kangaroo leather vertical card holder back out east to Maryland, but now I want to find a forever home for the Horween Leather Passport Wallet that Wayne so kindly left me.

To enter my giveaway all you need to do is make a comment on this blog post with a number of your choice from between one (1) and one hundred (100).

On Friday, August 14th 2015 shortly after 6pm PST I will use an iPad app that generates random numbers to draw the winning number. The person with the number closest to the number generated (higher or lower) will be the winner of the MiBelle Custom Leatherworx Horween Leather Passport Wallet.

It is up to you to scan or read the comments before you choose a number to make sure you have not chosen a number that somebody has already chosen ahead of you. If two or more people enter with the same number and that number is the winning number, then the person who entered first will be declared the winner.

I will limit this contest-giveaway to one entry per email address.

This contest will close on Friday August 14th 2015 at 6 PM Pacific Standard Time.

After a winner has been decided I will contact the winner through the email address that they have provided me when they commented on this post.

The winner will be required to answer a skill-testing question.

The winner will be required to pay for the cost of shipping the prize from the post office near my home to their home.

Disclosure – Wayne did not pay me or provide any incentive for me to write this post and as always, I maintain full editorial control of everything that is posted here on this blog.

MiBelle Custom Leatherworx

Wayne Higgins, the very creative owner/operator of MiBelle Custom Leatherworx (based in Dartmouth Nova Scotia!) stopped in to see me while he was on a cross-Canada tour.

After visiting with me for some time he left me with a couple very lovely wallets and a belt. One of the wallets is a 4 slot vertical card wallet – made of kangaroo leather. Kangaroo leather is one of the strongest leathers available to work with and yet the wallet he made is incredibly soft and almost waxy to the touch. Very cool.

Another plus to the kangaroo leather wallet is the very rich leather scent.

The main outside piece of leather is quite thick and the inner leather used for the card slots is a thinner leather making it have a substantial feel to it while keeping a relatively thin profile.

Some have commented on the size of the logo on the outside front of the wallet. It is larger than I like but because it is burned into the leather it is not obtrusive nor too obvious.

Something I really admire about Wayne’s work is the stitching he does. On this wallet I had to search with a magnifying glass to see where he started and finished his stitching. It is, simply put, top quality stitching.

The same things apply to the Horween Leather Passport holder Wayne gave me – perfect stitching, perfect edging, and a wonderfully waxy feeling leather.

Simply put, Wayne Higgins at MiBelle Custom Leatherworx makes wonderful little wallets. And, stay tuned – I will be organizing a giveaway of the Horween Leather Passport wallet very soon!!

Marlondo Leather Bi-Fold Wallet Giveaway

I am pleased to announce that we have another GIVEAWAY to do!!

We have been through the giveaway routine before, however, this time there are a couple of things to be aware of. First, this giveaway is a little different because it is a giveaway of TWO Marlondo Leather bi-fold wallets.

To be clear, that means there will be two winners in this giveaway.

New Marlondo Leather Wallets – Video

Here is a link to my video review of the Marlondo Leather wallets I recently received from Ma. He sent these wallets to me with the hope that I would do a video review during which I could give my viewers, and him some honest feedback.

As I say in the video, I will be arranging a giveaway of some of these wallets in the coming days.

When I filmed the video it was focused very clearly on the wallets and then when I did the editing process I found it had cut off the bottom of my screen so the wallets are not shown as well as I would like them to be.

Also, my editing is a bit choppy – I had to cut about ten minutes of me blabbing on and on out of the video to get it to a reasonable length.

I may do a follow review of the big wallets and a video of the bi-folds. It is just trying to find a few minutes of quiet time to do that!!

Thanks for your patience as I try to develop my video skills!!

My Father’s Day Gifts Guide

Mason Jar Mug

If you are anything like me, you like to be quite clear about what gift you receive for Father’s Day. So in my effort to help you help your gift giving family members, here are a few links to the items that I believe are good ideas for Father’s Day gifts.

It will likely not come as a surprise to you that the best items for Father’s Day gifts are leather items.

The first place to look for a Father’s Day gifts is towards my friends, Josh and Jen Koch, leather workers supreme. They are a small operation and have always been willing to listen to suggestions or make small modifications to items I have purchased from them.

Horween Field Notes Sleeve
Horween Field Notes Sleeve

One of the prettiest pieces of leather work they make is a Field Notes Sleeve. The sleeve will hold a slim pen and a small pocket knife or business cards.

You can have your Field Notes Sleeve stitched in your choice of thread – I always get Josh to use a bright red thread on the work he does for me. You can order the Field Notes Sleeve for $60US plus $6US for shipping.

This one is a beauty!!

If you are looking for a budget price item and the dad in your life uses a double-edged safety razor, get him the safety razor cover for $12 and $3 for shipping.

I’ve got one of these razor covers and it is too cool for words. The cover protects my razor when I drop it into my dopp kit while traveling.

Another leather worker who’s work I really admire but have not yet had the pleasure of owning is Norman Cahn’s.

When I see the work that Norman Cahn does with wallets and I read the reviews written by his customers, I have no hesitation in adding my personal endorsement to his work. The stitching he does looks flawless!!

This beautiful little wallet, what he calls a Cabrio Horween Leather Wallet, is available in a variety of colours and could be in your father’s wallet for about one hundred dollars.

Norman has a good selection of items listed on his Etsy page and like Josh and Jen Koch, he is very open to working and collaborating with his customers to create amazing pieces of leather work.

The third Leather worker I have recently learned about is Wayne Higgins of Mibelle Custom Leatherworx and he is located in Dartmouth NS. He is going to drive across Canada, from the eastcoast to the westcoast and we plan to meet up so that I can have a look at some of his leather creations.

I am quite curious to see the leather work he does with Kangaroo leather. He has wallets made in brandy or black kangaroo leather that are lined with pig skin. The lined version sells for $32.00 CAD.

And last but definitely not least, from California are Juan’s Unique Creations from the Gentlemen Factory. Here you can buy a Horween Mason Jar mug and dontcha know, drinking from a Mason Jar is the hip thing to do. However, if a Mason Jar mug is just a shade too hipster for your, dad get him a Horween Valet Tray for $30.

Or if you really want to kick it up a notch and spoil dad, get him a Horween leather briefcase for $550 or the Steinbeck Messenger bag in Horween for $450. Once again, the work done in the Juan’s Unique Creations from the Gentlemen Factory is beautiful with exquisite attention paid to detail.

Whichever business you decide to purchase your Father’s Day gifts from, you are pretty much guaranteed that the dad in your life will be delighted with the gift.

Koch Leather Goodies

Koch Leather Goodies

Today I picked up my newest Koch Leather goodies – a coffee cup cozy and a razor holder.

Coffee Cup Cozy
Coffee Cup Cozy

Just like every other Koch Leather piece that I have, these are absolutely exquisite in their attention to detail.

I had previously bought a coffee cup cozy that was a little too big for my coffee cup and my sister grabbed it because it fit her coffee cup perfectly. It’s interesting to note that it also fits a 16 ounce beer glass.

The stitching on that piece, like the stitching on my new coffee cup cozy was also perfect.

Red Stitching Coffee Cozy

Something I really appreciate about Koch Leather is that the customer can give input into the details of the color of the leather and the color of the thread that is used. I really like the red thread that shows a strong contrast between the stitching and the leather. Not everyone likes that strong contrast, but I certainly do and Josh Koch is happy to oblige me.

I also have two mason jars from Koch Leather with the leather wrap around (as in the picture above). For those items I also chose the strong look of the red thread. I like those mason jars for drinking my morning tea or when I’m having a hipster moment, for drinking what the cool kids call Bone Broth (beef stock).

I also have from Koch Leather a hipster wallet and Field Notes cover. I very much like the minimalist nature of the hipster wallet because it is a perfect front pocket wallet for when I am traveling.

Koch Leather Hipster Wallet
Koch Leather Hipster Wallet

If I’m on the road I don’t always need to have a full-size wallet with me. I typically carry my bank card, my credit card, my drivers license, and my health card. And if I’m staying in a hotel I keep my credit card-like door keys in it as well.

One thing I would suggest with the hipster wallet is that the snap closure on the wallet be moved a little bit more to the centre. I’m talking about a quarter of an inch over. I believe that would make it open a little smoother. However, overall the quality of this little hipster wallet is like every other one of my Koch Leather pieces -exquisitely detailed.

The Field Notes cover rides in the back pocket of my dungarees and is developing a beautiful patina with the natural characteristics of the leather becoming more pronounced.

Koch Leather Tote
Koch Leather Tote

My sweetheart needed a new purse-like bag and during the Koch Leather kick starter they were promoting their tote bags. So, Sweetheart got a Koch Leather tote bag. It is also a really well designed and useful bag. There is a pocket on the inside at the top of the bag that fits a phone or small wallet. Sweetheart ‘s only complaint about the tote is that small stuff does tend to disappear into the chaos of the bottom of her bag. Using a carabiner on the little d-ring on the side of the tote keeps her keys from disappearing into the chaos.

The leather that Josh and Jen use is really beautiful leather. It has a nice feel and scent so that when you touch it or when you hold it up to your nose, it feels and smells like natural leather.

The thing I really appreciate about Koch Leather is their willingness to do what the customer wants. If I tell him I want red stitching, he says no problem. If I ask if I can have it in a lighter brown leather, he will let me know what he can do.

Bottom line, Koch Leather will be getting more of my business. When I want to get a new messenger bag, Koch Leather will be my go to. They make beautiful stuff, they’re happy to accommodate customer feedback and they seem to do it with a smile. Two thumbs up on the Koch Leather.

Avallone Luxury Wallet

Avallone Luxury
Avallone Luxury

This beautiful little package arrived at my mailbox early last week and I have been so busy with family and academic commitments that I only just opened it up this morning.

I found inside this package a beautifully crafted wallet.

It is my intention for this long weekend (it is Family Day in B.C.) to film, edit and upload a video review of this Avallone Luxury wallet before I return to the world of academia next Tuesday.

Also, because this wallet was sent to me at no cost from Christopher at Avallone Luxury, I will be organizing a giveaway of this wallet to one of my lucky readers. Stay tuned for details on that giveaway.
