Construction Worker Dies on Vancouver Job Site

Today’s post is a very sad one; yesterday 28 year old Dan Martens died on a construction site in Vancouver. The cause of Martens death is being investigated but early indications are that a concrete form came loose and fell on him.

When anybody dies an untimely death it is tragic. The deeper tragedy in this case is that Dan Martens was married with four children ranging in age from two months to twelve years old. Those little ones will never again see their Daddy walk into their home.

Jan Noster of the Construction Maintenance and Allied Workers union told CTV News that, “There are no accidents, there’s only failures of processes and systems. I’m sure after investigations are concluded here, they’ll find that there were failures of processes and systems.”

Once again, a preventable accident has taken the life of a young man. A young man who had a great sense of humour and a great work ethic. A young man who had a wife and four children.

As soon as I find out if there is a trust fund set-up to assist Dan Martens’ family I will share that information with you. His young family will need our loving thoughts, prayers and more than likely, some form of financial support. We can step up. We will. (The “we” includes you.)

  1. can I respectfully request that the statement “there are no accidents” stop being reported and posted with such assertiveness?

to insinuate that there are no accidents (perhaps Jan Noster should look up the definition of the word) is to insinuate that these tragedies are caused because someone intentionally didn’t follow a procedure or system. Accidents happen… *BY ACCIDENT*.
    By definition…
    1.
an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap: automobile accidents.
    2.
Law . such a happening resulting in injury that is in no way the fault of the injured person for which compensation or indemnity is legally sought.
    3.
any event that happens unexpectedly, without a deliberate plan or cause.

I know personally one of the young men who is struggling with this tragedy-who was on site. the last thing he needs is to hear all these assertions that there are no accidents-because I promise you he is already wracked with grief over his best friend, augmented by feeling that he caused it–and the assertion is a faulty assertion in the first place.

beyond that, tho, i thank you for your sensitive post regarding this tragedy. We will all miss our friend dearly, and Tamara WILL need support.

  2. Lets all chill till we get some real facts about what happened. Its too easy to speculate and seek out a scapegoat instead of focussing on the grieving family at this normally festive family season
