Coquitlam Hosting a Compost Tea Party

Coquitlam is hosting a very different kind of party on Thursday, May 10, 2012. To celebrate International Compost Awareness Week, the City is inviting people to attend a Compost Tea Party.

“The event is aimed at teaching people how to feed their plants and soil naturally with compost,” said Verne Kucy, Coquitlam’s Manager of Environmental Services. “Compost is good for your plants, it’s good for the planet and it’s good for your wallet!”

If you have a backyard or worm composter you can produce nutritious compost for your garden. Put all the food scraps that can’t be placed in your backyard or worm composter into your Green Can and the City will compost it for you. Using the Green Can or your own composter are good options, as food that slowly wastes away in the landfill produces methane, a strong greenhouse gas. It is also cheaper to compost food than to send it to the landfill, so it’s a more cost effective way to manage waste.

For those wanting to learn more about composting, they can attend this fun FREE night of workshops and refreshments. It will be held on Thursday, May 10 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Inspiration Garden in TownCentre Park. No registration is required.
