Our Family Vacation in Port Alberni and Tofino

I was planning on writing a blog post about our trip to Tofino and our stay at Middle Beach Lodge but everything has changed for now. Just outside of Port Alberni an oncoming car crossed the centre line and hit our rented van head-on.

Everyone in our vehicle is now fine and healthy. The little ones and my Sweetheart were pretty upset by the “boom-boom” but they are physically fine. My chest hit the steering wheel pretty hard and as soon as you say anything about your chest hurting, well it is into the ambulance and off to the ER. As it turned out, I was not having a heart attack.

The real story is about the people of Port Alberni. Every single person we met has gone above and beyond to be kind and helpful to us. Everyone.

For now I will give a special thank you-shout-out to Adelle and her husband at the Best Western. Leah the nurse from Alberta, Tim in Car 11, Cst Dawson, Gillian, the teacher from Royal Roads, the kitchen staff in Stamps Restaurant, paramedics Debbie and Duane, president of Port Alberni Teachers’ Association, Ken Zydyk, and Dr Sanders and so many others.

So many of these people said things like, “Tomorrow is my day off. If you need anything, here is my home number. Call me.”

The people of Port Alberni are amazing people. The kindness that the people of Port Alberni have shown me and my family has been extraordinary. They will forever be in my heart.

I will write more soon but for now I am going to rest and enjoy a glass of wine.

Glad to hear you are all fine and that Port Alberni came through in such a stellar way. A little TLC can go a long way.

Having relatives that have lived in Port since the fifties, and having lived there myself for a short time,I attest to the character of these fine folks. They are wonderful people. They are always ready to lend a hand,no matter how tough things get.A good lesson for us self-centred city folks.

And of course we can’t forget the ultimate sacrifice made by the two paramedics from out that way.

I was so excited to read about a fellow Tofino traveler, so you can imagine my shock when I read about the accident you experienced. I am glad everyone was okay and that you had excellent care from the locals in Port Alberni.
