On Kingsway just barely east of Royal Oak Ave is The Indian Wok – a restaurant serving delightful Indian style Chinese food. The proprietor and her husband were born in China and raised in India and developed their food style from their Chinese upbringing in India.
The first dish we had was a plate of spicy green beans ($9.95). This is exactly how I like my green beans prepared – thrown in a hot wok for fleeting moments to soften them up and then a spicy red pepper dressing with large chunks of onion added to the wok. Wonderful.
My Mom’s favourite way to test a new restaurant’s kitchen staff is to order General Tso’s chicken. The kitchen staff at the Indian Wok passed her test. A good sized plate of big, soft chunks of chicken with a perfectly sweet but not overly sweet coating. The large chunks of red and green pepper, onions and bamboo slices added a definite summery feel to the dish.
Another one of my favourite foods is eggplant. On the menu they have beef with spicy eggplant and green beans for $11.95. I didn’t feel like having beef and because we had ordered a green bean dish and I didn’t particularly want more green beans, I asked if they could change the beef to chicken and drop the beans. My favourite answer – no problem!
The dish turned out to be spectacular. The colours were awesome and the spicy flavours were outstanding.
A small side dish of rice for $1.35 was more than enough for the two of us.
We will definitely be returning to The Indian Wok to sample some of their more Indian-inspired dishes. An excellent find in South Burnaby that I recommend without any hesitation.
The Indian Wok is located at 5212 Kingsway, Burnaby BC.
