A No Longer Hidden Gem: the Northern Cafe and Grill

Tucked away on the second floor of the Northern Building Supplies lumberyard in Vancouver’s industrial landscape, the Northern Cafe and Grill stands as a testament to the city’s rich culinary diversity and history.

Established in 1949, this unassuming diner has been a beloved staple for locals and visitors alike, offering a unique blend of old-school charm and hearty, homemade meals.

Despite its low-key exterior, the Northern Cafe and Grill has managed to capture the hearts of many, becoming a go-to spot for those seeking comfort food and a nostalgic dining experience.

One of the defining features of Northern Cafe and Grill is its authenticity. Stepping inside, you’re immediately greeted by the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a classic diner.

The folks at the Northern Cafe and Grill have created an inviting space in which local labourers, oldtimers, hipsters, and people from out of town all sit together and share space.

The decor is simple, my kids call it “the wonky cafe” because there is not a straight line nor level surface inside the diner. And that just adds to the charm!

Northern Cafe and Grill Menu

The menu at Northern Cafe and Grill is a blend of traditional diner “breakfast all day” fare, burgers, sandwiches, and hearty, home-cooked meals.

Breakfast is a particular highlight, with generous portions of classics like eggs, bacon, and pancakes. My kids both love the cafe’s famous shredded hash browns.

Lunch options include an array of comfort foods, from juicy burgers and sandwiches to a selection of Chinese food dishes such as Wonton noodle soup, dumplings, curries, and fried rice. All of which are prepared with love.

While one of my kids chose to go with the breakfast menu, my other one went for the BLT. Both chose simple, satisfying, good food. Everything is made with fresh, quality ingredients, ensuring that each dish is as satisfying as the last.

One of the cafe’s standout dishes is the Northern Deluxe Burger, a juicy, perfectly cooked patty topped with cheddar, bacon, mushrooms, and fried onion. It is served with a side of crispy fries.

However, while one of my kids decided to go to the breakfast side of the menu and the other went straight for the lunch menu, I couldn’t decide whether to have a burger or breakfast.

To solve my dilemma, I just had the chef add a fried egg to my Crispy Onion Ring Burger! The soft yolk of the egg added even more creaminess to the burger. And that horseradish mayo hit all my tastebuds right in the feels. Loved it.

My kids also love the blueberry pancakes so we ordered one as a side to share at the table. Yummy.

Despite its industrial surroundings, the Northern Cafe and Grill feels like a cozy oasis, a place where time slows down, and good food and conversation take centre stage.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, a visit to the Northern Cafe and Grill is a chance to experience a piece of Vancouver’s heritage. It’s a reminder of the simple pleasures in life and the enduring appeal of a well-loved neighborhood diner.

The Northern Cafe and Grill is located at 1640 East Kent Ave South, in Vancouver. It is sort of tucked under the Knight Street bridge.

A word of advice, don’t park in the lumberyard – that is for people buying lumber. Park out on the street, wander in, watch for trucks and forklifts, and get your name on the list. If you go on the weekend, be prepared to wait. It is worth it.
