My foodie daughter and I were hungry for some brunch but we did not want to drive too far. Thankfully there are a number of interesting places in Coquitlam that serve brunch – including the cool little gem known as Kook’s Cooks.
So why is it called “Kook’s Cooks”? Because the restaurant is named after the chef – Jay Kook who is a chef with a varied culinary background.
Kook’s Cooks, located in Coquitlam on Austin Ave near Hillcrest is a small, family-oriented breakfast and brunch restaurant. You can get traditional breakfast and lunch menu items cuisine including daily soup, waffle, salads, sandwiches, pancakes, a variety of eggs benedict, and some pasta dishes. And more.
The focus of their menu is an authentic Canadian brunch style with a touch of Asian influence. The menu is inspired from different countries’ specialties to appeal to to a diverse clientele.
My daughter decided to try something new to her – chicken and waffles. She loved the idea of sweet and savory on the plate and very much enjoyed the experience. I tested out the crispy fried chicken thigh and give it a thumbs up for crispy deliciousness on the outside and juicy meat inside. My daughter also enjoyed it.
She also said the waffle was “one of the best she’s ever had.” I’m not sure it actually is an award winning waffle – my daughter has a limited world of experience in judging waffles. However, she may be correct – the waffle did taste great.
I decided to go for the freshness of an avocado croissant; fresh avocado, tomato slices, two scrambled eggs, swiss cheese, all sandwiched into a soft and squishy fresh French croissant. The side of potato hash – cubed potatoes fried to a crunchy perfection was a perfect partner to the rest of my healthy brunch choice.
Almost every time we drive by Kook’s Cooks there is a line up of people waiting to get in for a meal and after eating there, we understand why. We will be returning – when we see a break in the line-up!
