The Costco Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich; A Surprisingly Delicious Twist

I did not expect to be impressed by the Montreal smoked meat sandwich from the food court at Costco, but here we are. The new sandwich is, quite honestly, surprisingly good.

I have tried more than a few smoked meat sandwiches in my limited travels. Places such as the Ovaltine Cafe in Vancouver – a classic throwback diner, Dunn’s Famous, as well as Timber. I definitely enjoyed the Ovaltine sandwich.

Some of the Vancouver places where I tried the smoked meat sandwiches have sadly now closed – places such as Dunn’s Famous and Timber which was up on Robson Street.

While I have not yet been to any of the famous sandwich shops in Montreal, places like Schwartz’s, Reuben’s Deli, or Lester’s, I have tried my share of sandwiches.

Made in the food court, the Costco sandwich features tender, well-seasoned smoked meat stacked high on a triangular shaped rye bread bun.

It’s what you’d hope for in a classic Montreal-style sandwich—savory, satisfying, and relatively generously portioned. I added a generous squirt of the Costco mustard to the bun for more flavour.

My kid snagged the crisp pickle from my plate and she said it had just the right amount of zing to balance the richness of the meat.

If/when I have another Costco smoked meat sandwich what I might do is order two of them and put the smoked meat from the second sandwich into the bun of the other sandwich – double the meat in my sandwich. Also, maybe that way I can get a pickle before my kid grabs it!

Costco’s food court has always been known for its value, but this sandwich proves it can deliver on taste too. $8 for a decent Montreal smoked meat sandwich is pretty good value.

If you’re at Costco and feeling hungry, skip the hot dog and give the smoked meat sandwich a try. You might be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
