I was doing some thinking late last night. (Cue the peanut gallery comments here). The realization I came to (other than I will now only drink 12 year old, single malt scotch) is that my years of military battle-preparedness training skills transfer quite nicely to fatherhood.
For example, one of the battle preparedness, energy conservation philosophies we were taught to embrace was; “Do not stand if you can sit. Do not sit if you can lie down. Do not be awake if you can sleep.” This was especially applicable to when we were entering battle zones.
Now how perfect of a fit to fatherhood is that?! If the twins are playing in the toy compound, I sit. If they are playing contentedly, I lie down on the sofa. When they are napping, I am napping.
I knew those years of warrior training would have a civilian application at some point in my life.
One warning though, be careful when deciding when is a good time for sleeping. I thought a perfect time for a nap was during an inspirational chat with the mill shift supervisor…he didn’t think that was such a good time for me to be napping.
